peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookies

peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookies

I feel like the last several recipes I’ve made have all been “fancy” cookies. They’ve almost all been roll-out cookies (anything involving a rolling pin is “fancy” as far as I’m concerned), and a couple weeks ago I went a little nuts with the cookie shot glasses. So I really wanted to get back to basics this week with a simple drop cookie. It’s been forever since I’ve done something like that, right? A cookie-jar type cookie. Total comfort food.  (more…)

chocolate cookie cutouts

These Chocolate Cookie Cutouts are rich enough that you'll think they're made with melted chocolate. They're dense and fudgy and hold their shape.

I finally succumbed to that cold that’s been plaguing all my coworkers (ugh), so there were no cookies for awhile. I got a lot of complaints. No sympathy, just a lot of complaints (*sigh*). Okay, just kidding. Everyone was very understanding. I only heard complaints about the lack of cookies from one person (he knows who he is). But since I made extra cookies a couple weeks ago, I still have a post to make. When I made the roll-out chocolate chip cookies, my main reason for trying that recipe was to attempt making some cookie shot glasses. I wasn’t sure how many actual cookies I’d end up with, so just to be sure I had enough for the week, I decided to make an additional recipe. I was initially thinking maybe I’d try making shot glasses with the second recipe too, so I chose another roll-out cookie. But the chocolate chip ones turned out great, so the second recipe just became regular cookies.  (more…)

cookie shot glasses

Has everyone seen the new cookie shot glasses that are making the blog rounds? It was announced recently by Dominique Ansel, who gave us the cronut in 2013. These have been seriously big news the last week. Well, a friend of mine decided that I needed to make some. So. Here we go…  (more…)

One of my friends twisted my arm and convinced me to try making those cookie shot glasses that are in the news right now (check it out!). In the interests of authenticity, I wanted to use a chocolate chip cookie dough just like Dominique Ansel did. I’d never seen a roll-out chocolate chip cookie recipe before though. I checked all my books – no luck. So then I checked google. And look at that, SweetSugarBelle posted a recipe in 2011.  (more…)

coconut orange butter cookies

coconut orange cookies

This week I had a craving for something with coconut. And I knew I’d seen some pretty little cookies dipped in coconut somewhere in one of my books and that was the recipe I wanted to make, but it took me awhile to find it again. I have a lot of books. Have I mentioned that? This particular recipe is my first endeavour from yet another cookie book that’s been sitting on my shelf for awhile.  (more…)

flo’s chocolate snaps

flo's chocolate snaps

I’m a big fan of David Lebovitz. I’ve made several of his ice creams from The Perfect Scoop (amaaaaazing), as well as sauces and caramels, and I often refer to his website for techniques. Shortly before xmas, I stumbled upon an eGullet thread devoted to his book Ready for Dessert: My Best Recipes. How did I not know about this book?? All the photos posted in the thread looked so delicious and the reviews were very positive, so of course I went out and bought a copy. I had to have it, right? Shut up. This is the first recipe I’m trying from this book. Actually, it’s the first baking recipe of his that I’ve ever tried.  (more…)

cinnamon bun cookies

What's better than a cinnamon bun? Cinnamon bun cookies! Soft, tender, and packed with cinnamon flavour.

cinnamon bun cookies

I’m almost embarrassed to admit this, but this is the first time I’ve ever made a pinwheel cookie. Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve ever even eaten one before! But every time I see a picture of one online or in one of my cookbooks, I just think “oooh, how pretty!” And even after reading recipes and techniques (and yes, I even watched a couple YouTube videos before attempting), I had this idea that they must be so complicated to make. Nope. If you can roll out dough, you can make a pinwheel cookie.  (more…)

linzer cookies

linzer cookies

Yes, this week is another heart-themed cookie (because I’m still a sap). I’ve made linzer cookies before, but I’ve always just used different sized cookie cutters to achieve the effect. I finally broke down and bought an actual linzer cookie cutter though, so I had to use it. For the past couple weeks, I’ve been finding and bookmarking all the linzer recipes in my cookbooks in preparation for this week (sap). Why did I choose this one? Why not. It sounded really good with the combination of spices and zests. Plus I’ve only baked one cookie from this book so far, so it was its turn.  (more…)

soft sugar cookies

These tender, soft sugar cookies are one of my new favourites. They have a hint of lemon flavour and can be simply decorated with sanding sugars.

These tender, soft sugar cookies are one of my new favourites. They have a hint of lemon flavour and can be simply decorated with sanding sugars.

I wanted to make some heart cookies this week (yes, I’m a sap), so my first thought was to look at sugar cookies again. They’re a classic all-purpose cookie, right? Does everyone love sugar cookies? Everyone I know does, but I’ve seen some things online about people thinking they’re boring. What!? Blasphemy! I have a lot of recipes to choose from, but narrowed it down to a couple recipes from books that I haven’t baked much from yet. They’re almost identical in terms of ingredients and quantities, except for the butter. One calls for 1/2 cup of butter, while the other uses three times as much. Guess which one I decided to go with…  (more…)

milk chocolate orange cookies

milk chocolate orange cookies

I’m revisiting a recipe from the Milk & Cookies cookbook with a variation of a cookie I made back in September. I’ve been really happy with all the cookies I’ve made from this book so far. The only issue I’ve had (and I’ve mentioned this every time) is that the actual yield is consistently waaaaaaay higher than stated in the book. This recipe, for example, is only supposed to make 2 dozen cookies. I got 100. Bit of a difference, right?  (more…)

Chewy chocolate gingerbread cookies, made with fresh grated ginger and loaded with chunks of dark chocolate. This cookie packs a punch of flavour.

I made this cookie for xmas several years ago, and it instantly became not only one of my favourites, but among my friends and coworkers too. And it’s been a big part of my xmas tradition ever since. One year I brought them in to work and one of my coworkers actually hid them so no one else could have any. Seriously! This year, I had so many other recipes to try that this one got left out. But I had to promise to make it soon after the holidays. So here we are.  (more…)

brown sugar pecan cookies

brown sugar pecan cookies

I decided to venture a little out of my comfort zone again this week and picked a recipe that I probably wouldn’t have chosen for myself. Not that I didn’t think this cookie looked good, but if I were baking for myself, I’d probably choose something with more chocolate. Or lemon(more…)

chocolate cranberry spice cookies

chocolate cranberry spice cookies

I actually started making this cookie over a month ago, but discovered mid-prep that I was missing both the cranberries and the walnuts. Oops. So I packaged up the already-mixed dry ingredients and set them aside to come back to later. Finally, after all my xmas baking and a nice long relaxing break, I’m ready to tackle them again. This time with all the ingredients at-hand.  (more…)

This is the cookie featured on the cover of The Gourmet Cookie Book. They look SO pretty – perfectly round little jewels. Mine aren’t quite so perfect, but the real test is the flavour. And they definitely pass that test.  (more…)

walnut shortbread

walnut shortbread

When I made the lemon shortbread last week, the recipe on the following page caught my eye too. At first I wasn’t going to make it, because I was already making some shortbread. And then I thought, “well, it’s not like you can have too much shortbread… right?”. Right.  (more…)
